Sheesh. I feel like I have interest / something to contribute / questions in every single thread on this board.

I have been neglecting my Livid elements stuff, and I have Livid Brain builds designed and never fabricated… and I want to do more with my CNTRL:R…….

But will I ever do any of this? I need the community, and it feels like its going away. The last post on this board was from me, back in August! Boo.

What can we do? How can we get the dozen or so people to visit a place and talk to each other about Livid stuff? Discord? Reddit? Youtube? Zoom? I dunno. I guess this was bound to happen when the company stopped making things… but dammit, these are great controllers. I still haven’t seen better ones. Not built like this. Not so well laid out. Not so simple, yet so powerful.

I don’t want to be the only one talking about this stuff.

Just saw that. Offered to help if it the cleaning didn’t take. Within reason. They don’t have a DS1, otherwise, they could have all my stuff.

    Nobody, huh?

And you know there’s like at least ten of them in closets not touched in years right now. Grrrr..

    Yeah. This place is dope.

    Isopropyl Alcohol. But….
If that isn’t it? I have a bunch of NOS (New Old Stock) Livid Push Encoders. How many are we talking here? three or thirteen?

I’d love an ohm, but I can’t. If you had a DS1, I wouldn’t be able to resist.

Good luck. Let me know if the cleaning of the contacts did anything, and if you need a small amount of encoders, I might be willing to part with a couple.

    UPDATE

The XPC 4K2JS works like a charm.

I think I am doing something wrong with the 1/4″ inputs. Again, I want to use the Livid “Master Fader,” a crossfader with a 1/4″ output. I want to use the second 1/4″ input on the CNTRL:R for an expression pedal.

The way I read the manual, any 1/4″ device plugged in must be the electrical/ mechanical equivalent of a knob. One end reads as a 0, turned all the way up is 127, with 1-126 as the positions between zero and max, whether it be on a knob, pedal (all the way up or down,) and the Master Fader being all the way left or all the way right. As I understand it, anything plugged into the 1/4″ CNTRL:R inputs must be TRS, or a TWO STRIPE 1/4″ plug, not TS ends with a single stripe.

But when I try to think abstractly about it, maybe I have it backwards? Maybe I am supposed to be using TS?

This is why I wonder…. The Master Fader when it is used to slide back and fourth, it kicks out MIDI readings. However, when the fader is let go of, half the time, it doesn’t stop kicking out MIDI data.

Next, I have a bunch of expression pedals. All but One have 1/4″ outputs. EVERY SINGLE ONE is a TS cable end type, with a single stripe. I still have to find the fancy Moog Expression pedal, and am hoping that has what I need.

OR…. that I am reading he manual incorrectly and I need to be using TS cable ends on everything.

Hints? Anyone tried this on their CNTRL:R or OHM?

    Looking GOOD Looking GOOD.

Using offline editor. Running out of time and am not going to get everything done this second, but!

So far the XPC 4K2JS works like a charm in the editor.

The Master Fader is an odd animal. It sends MIDI data, an I can watch the values when I move the fader. However. When the fader is still, MIDI data is still being transmitted. I have to pay closer attention to the values it is transmitting. It might be a dirty contact.

And I have to open up some rubbermaid containers to find the right expression pedal, but so far so good. All I have seen is that the devices are sending MIDI data through the CNTRL:R, but it’s a start. Ableton next!

Then brain JR for some momentary pedals. OOOOooooo maybe some crazy stomp box I can really pound on?!?!

**UNDERSTOOD**. _I HOPE_ I CAN HELP…. even if it is just by including manual / wifi info here. Perhaps I’ll stumble upon the answer with a little help from ya’ll.

Sometimes, when I actually type out a question clearly, it’s easier for me to get closer to the answer, if not solve it. Just found this in the old _**CNTRL:R wiki**_ **:** from the wayback machine that I am going to try to copy and paste research for this question below and see how close I can get.

I have tried to include the info from the wiki that should answer my question here. Please, anybody, feel free to chime in. This is 90% just copy and paste and edit from the wiki about the two 1/4″ jacks and the 8 Pin XPC input in an effort to get them working inside Ableton.

For the record, I have a CNTRL:R I use in Ableton with the LividCNTRLR2 mapping. I own a Master Fader and several expression pedals, as well as an XPC 4K2JS. I’d like to use all three with the CNTRL:R. I for sure know what type of cable the pedal and fader need, and I can make that happen quickly. I have to check the cable ends of the expression pedals I own. I assume it won’t be an issue. In other words, I do not see connecting the devices as an issue. Not sure what will happen after I do that…… OK. Begin some info from Livid, back when the wiki was live…

    end Spaker Comments**

    **Expansion Jacks**

The CNTRL-R has TWO expansion jacks for connecting additional analog controls. You can use the 1/4″ jacks to connect expression pedals, or wiring devices like faders, knobs, etc. The pin header connections allow you direct access to the Brain of the CNTRL-R for wiring up to 8 additional analog controls.

    ![](https://web.archive.org/web/20140726092307im_/http://wiki.lividinstruments.com/images/3/38/Block_expansion.jpg “”)

    **2** – **1/4″ Input Jacks**
WARNING this jack is designed ONLY for passive input.
Plugging anything voltage (like audio) causes damage

**TRS JACKS ONLY. TWO STRIPES ONPLUG**
**NO TS JACKS WITH SINGLE STRIPE**

**WARNING this jack is NOT designed for switch pedals. Explicitly for TRS jacks.**

Switching pedal (or any TS 1/4″ ) will short power supply; can damage it.

1/4″ Jacks _can be used as analog controls with a variable resistor wired to them_ (fader, knob, etc)

**If you are rewiring an alternative pedal or a variable resistor, arrange pins:**

    – **The Tip is power, the Ring is wiper (or signal), and Sleeve is ground**

….It goes on to say directly below:

    **”B – Expansion Pins**

    ![](https://web.archive.org/web/20140726032201im_/http://wiki.lividinstruments.com/images/f/f9/Expansion_pins.jpg “”)

**This pin header lets you connect up to eight additional analog controls to the CNTRL-R.

**The 10-pin analog pin header has Power (Pin1 lower left) and Ground (Pin2 top left), and 8 more pins for individual inputs (Pins 3-10).**

**Each pot should have its outer pins connected to Ground and Power, with the wiper pin connected to one individual input pin (Pins 3-10).**

**The numbering in the diagram relates the expansion jack’s pins to the pin numbers of an analog pin header on the Brain.**

    **C – Dip Switch**

The dip switches next to the pin header allow you to activate the analog inputs. *To activate the analogs you need to put them in the up position.* _If you are not using an analog on the pin header it needs to be in the down position_ as this grounds the connection and prevents it from sending data. Switches 1-8 correspond to pin 3-10 on the pin *header as pin 1 and 2 are ground and power.*

    **The Master Fader**

    **Spaker comment**

I know it was made for the CNTRL:R after the OHM had one and some CNTRL:R users asked for it. It wasn’t popular by any means, but there were a group that requested it from
livid. By the time I got my CNTRL:R, they weren’t even selling them, but I found out they existed and someone in the office fished the very last one out of a cabinet for me. So I know it works with the CNTRL:R. From what I read above, both 1/4″ jacks are TRS, so two “striped” 1/4 inch should do it.

_I like the idea_ of one or more momentary pedals to use like buttons or switches, but that would be in a separate build (like a brain Jr device) I believe and will be for another time. Perhaps just a simple box with half a dozen quarter inch TS inputs for momentary switches: probably pedals, but who knows? Maybe pedals on the floor, and some arcade buttons on the box surface or something.

    **XPC Controllers**

That brings me to the XPC 4K2JS. I got it later into my first CNTRL:R ownership, did not ever set it up or even look into it, before my first CNTRL:R had a beer dumped on and in it at the last gig that one ever played. I only recently replaced it, years later.

I’d love to have the joysticks move the boundary boxes around the groups of clips in session view each MIDI controller is recording. (A secondary dream is to figure out how to lock all the boxes so when I move one, I move them all) But just being able to move around the MIDI controller available on screen controls would be a GREAT use for those joysticks IMO. _

Further in the old Livid wiki I found this about XPC controllers in general

    **XPC Controllers**

    Contents
    1 Introduction
    1.1 Features
    1.2 XPC Naming
    2 Controls and Connections
    2.1 Connecting the Controller
    2.2 Configuring the Controller
    2.3 Troubleshooting
    3 Editor
    4 Support

    **Features**

The XPC controllers allow you to add additional analog controls to your Livid control surface by connecting them to the expansion port of the Block, OhmRGB, CNTRL:R, and Brain. Using a 10 pin ribbon cable (included with your XPC purchase) the XPC controllers connect to to expansion port of your Livid Controller, or analog pin header of the Livid Brain.

    **XPC Naming**

For simplicity we have named the XPC models according to the parts that make up the device (_ex. 4K4F 4 Knobs, 4 Faders_)

    **F – Fader (fader/ slide potentiometer)
    K – Knob (rotary potentiometer)
    JS – Joystick**

    **Connecting the Controller**

*1.* Locate the expansion port of your XPC controller.
*2.* Using the included 10 pin ribbon cable place the connector into the XPC’s expansion jack. (note that the connector and jack have a tab on it that only allows it only to be connect in one direction)
*3.* Locate the expansion port on your Livid controller.
*4.* Using the other end of the ribbon cable, plug the connector into the expansion jack of your Livid Controller. (note that the connector and jack have a tab on it that only allows it to be connect inserted in one direction)

    **Configuring the Controller**

Since the XPC controller adds additional analog controls, unused analog controls need to do be grounded when not used. The dip switches on the expansion jacks of the Livid controllers allow you to enable and disable the additional analog controls. Once the controller is connected you will need to enable the controls by following these instructions.

    ![](https://web.archive.org/web/20140830033946im_/http://wiki.lividinstruments.com/images/4/42/Expansion.jpg “”)

    * Locate the dip switches on the expansion port of your Livid controller.

    * Using your fingertips or a small object such as a paperclip, **move all of the dip switches into the up, or on position.**

    * This will enable all of the controls on the XPC controller.

**IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE DIP SWITCHES BE PUT BACK INTO THE OFF, OR DOWN POSITION WHEN NOT USING THE XPC CONTROLLERS OR YOU WILL GET STREAMING MIDI DATA!**

OK. I am going to go for it step by step

Oh. I also have a 4K2JS that connects to the CNTRL:R

Willing to learn how to integrate all three pieces. Long ago, I had the crossfader working, but can’t remember what I did to make that happen.

Somebody let me know where to look or how to make these accessories work with my CNTRL:R

-Pedal (I have momentary, and expression. A nice moog expression and some digital piano expression pedals)
    – Master Fader (Livid’s Crossfader. Stand alone unit with a 1/4″ jack.) CNTRL:R has two 1/4″ Jacks
    – 4K2JS module (Plugs in with multipin cable)

Right now I use the most modern mapping in Ableton 11 where any of the first 4 channels can run drum rack sequencers for synth or drums.

I also use some other MIDI controllers, but I don’t think that has much bearing here. I do have a question about that I might as well mention and probably post as its own question, but since I am listing things I wish I could do with my CNTRL:R….

The Ableton colored boxes in session view that represent whatever MIDI controller has direct control over. So if you had a Launchpad, the colored box would surround the first eight channels and the first eight clips in each, surrounding 64 clips, one for each button on the Launchpad. You can move these boxes with each MIDI controller. I’d like to be able to lock the boxes and have them all move together, even though they are for different controllers.

I have a Launchpad, LaunchControl, and LaunchControl XL. They work great together, but have three boxes that move independently. It would br great to know how to make all the boxes move together. It would be great to get any multi MIDI controller setup with multiple colored boxes to be able to lock and move together.

Any ideas on any of this appreciated

I figure since my last post has remained up top for a minute, starting a new one would look like I am trying a takeover or something.

I don’t know if this will get into scripting… or if more programming would be needed or if I could plug and play and just map tthe extrnal controls withing ableton. The crossfader is pretty obvious as to where it gets mapped.

But I use the CNTRL:R now and I have only recently gotten a new one afte myy last one was destroyed (see above)

I’d like to use the 1/4″ jacs on my CNTRL:R. I have a Livid Master Fader made of rit. I have expression and momentary pedals that all take 1/” jacks.

I just don’t know what kind of 1/4″ jack to use, or how to make it work. I have been using the stadard ableton script as of late in Ableton 11.

    Thanks for any help

The high hasn’t worn off yet! I have played out with the CNTRL:R again, this time with a planned and practiced (sorta) set. Much better. Plus I haven’t been able to keep my hands off it at home. I really thought I was in a Livid limbo I could never escape.

Now… I have a LOT of Livid stuff – or, I should say Livid components and accessories. I have 800 different ideas but the spaghetti isn’t sticking to the wall yet. I’d love to hear any creative suggestions on builds, uses, or whatever pops in your head when you see these ingredients….

    (2) Livid Brain Jr
    (4) OMNI Boards
Livid elements “eurorack” style w/ 4 Livid Components run by Livid Brain
Livid Faders, Encoders, Buttons, Knobs, etc. Every part of my controller can be replaced – except the main circuit board.
Broken CNTRL:R. Circuit board fried by dancing patron with full beer. All the hardware parts work and can be used as spares / on other projects
    Working CNTRL:R !!! yay
XPC 4K2JS stand alone hooked to CNTRL:R
Master Fader – Livid Crossfader connected to CNTRL:R via 1/4″ jack

I think that is it as far as official Livid brand stuff. I have mountains of compatible faders, encoders, LEDs, buttons, switches, touch faders, and on and on.

Throw some spaghetti! Give me ideas! There is no stupid ideas! Tell me I should make a MIDI controller with the Brain Jr, designed to have the same controls as a Nintendo, and only use it to play super mario brothers. Tell me I should use all the broken CNTRL:R parts, take apart the elements, and build a new supercontroller.

Whatever. You guys are creative. What would you make?

I got one I got one I got one I got one!!!!

Oh this is good good good for me.

And could be bad bad bad bad for you. I get a little obsessed with my Livid projects once they get going. And I have been without my CNTRL:R for so long… And the toys that go with it: the Livid Master Fader (crossfader someone fished out of a drawer for me at Livid years after they stopped making them,) my XPC 4K2JS, and the expression pedal I never got to try on my first one. I think Ableton has jumped from 9.xxx to 11.xx since I had a working CNTRL:R.

SO SO EXCITED. TOO EXCITED. Brought it to my regular gig last weekend without practicing or putting the set together correctly. WAY too over confident and just hyped to have it. BAAAAD set. Eeesh. What do the kids say? cringe. It was that but I was still amped to have it. And I have been messing with it on different machines I didn’t have before. Installing different versions of Ableton. Loading select VSTs, kind of making a new default performance laptop again. Ridiculous amount of file housekeeping to do… but I am HYPED.

So glad this board continues and the work continues for this gear, which we all know deserves it. We know that Livid stuff is built extremely well and is “hard” to use because it can be molded to do just about anything in the right hands. Too bad we’re all musicians and not majority programming talented. Thank baby jesus for those who do know how and save us all when you absolutely do not have to..

    BACK BABY
