Howdy all,
I’m having issues getting the encoder knobs to map to the 12 knobs of the Drum Steppr (or the Accent or Synth Stepper). I’ve followed all the videos online on how to do it properly but have had no luck. I’ve been able to update my firmware to 1.27, and have tried reinstalling the Python scripts multiple times. I’ve even reinstalled Max to see if the issue is there but nothing. I’ve attach a photo to show you what I mean.

A very strange part is when I load the M4L device onto a track, or I change the control surface input/output in my Ableton MIDI session, the names of each of those 12 knobs appears for a brief second, and then they disappear again.
Anyone had this issue/know how to resolve it?
I’ve had this problem for a while now and I’m determined to fix it
December 23, 2020 at 11:56 pm #975amounraParticipantThere’s a lot of places that things can go wrong with the stepprs. Before we get into troubleshooting, can you tell me what versions of Live and Max you have installed?
I notice that your DrumSteppr version (in the picture) is 1.4. Thats an old one….mine says 1.5 here locally for DrumSteppr, and 1.4 for SynthSteppr. Have you tried updating m4m8?

December 24, 2020 at 12:00 am #976rahmscMemberAbleton is 10.1.30 and Max is 8.1.8.
December 24, 2020 at 12:15 am #977rahmscMemberDidn’t see the second part of the comment before posting sorry.
Also, didn’t realise there were updates for the M4L devices in m4m8 haha.
I just tried updating it there and still having a similar problem. However now, at least the encoder knobs are turning the parameters on the Drum Steppr. Thing is the far left knob on the middle row of my CNTRL:R controls the second knob on the top row of the stepper, and the next 8 knobs follow in the consecutive order from that point (ending on the first parameter on the bottom row – I believe the note repeater). Maybe this might tells us where the problem is??
December 24, 2020 at 12:16 am #978amounraParticipantSo yeah, should be working. I’d say to make sure that you’re using the most current files from the m4m8 repository. Also, the Python scripts have moved in current Live versions to your Ableton user library (which, by default is in ~/Music/Ableton/).
If you replace all the Python files and m4m8 folder in your ~/Documents/Max 8 directory, things should work. If not, let me know. I’ll probably need to have a look at your log.txt file and a screenshot of your Max window from ableton after trying to load the device. I’m almost certain it’s a version mismatch though, I see it a lot

I will try this nowDecember 24, 2020 at 1:01 am #981rahmscMemberOkay, first of all thank you so much for your time and help
Some of these questions might sound noob so apologises.
So with your first point, I have the scripts in my MIDI remote script folder in Ableton, is that the only place??
second point, where do I replace the python scripts in the Max 8 directory? Do i place the m4m8 folder into ~/documents/max 8/ or do I empty the m4m8 folder into the max 8. Currently the folder was in my max 8/Packages folder.
And finally how do I get you a log.txt file from Max 8??
December 24, 2020 at 1:25 am #982amounraParticipantActually, looks like 10.1.30 may have broken a couple of things in the script. Not surprising, since the Live 11 beta has broken every single thing I’ve written for the last 5 years lol.
Your questions:
> So with your first point, I have the scripts in my MIDI remote script folder in Ableton, is that the only place??
The scripts only need to be in one place, but that place has now changed. Although Ableton Live.app is where the scripts used to live, Ableton changed things a few versions ago and now the scripts should be added to your User Library folder (which could be anywhere, because you can set the location in Ableton’s preferences, but by default it is at ~/Music/Ableton/User Library/Remote Scripts). I need to update the readme, but have been busy overhauling everything for Live 11, so apologies

The whole folder goes in docs/max 8/Packages….no need to do anything further there. Just replace the one already in packages and you should be good.
I just updated the m4m8 repository with some fixes for 10.1.30 compatibility, so make sure to download a fresh copy!
Let me know if that gets you going

January 4, 2021 at 1:22 am #983rahmscMemberI’ve gotten it to work!
I’ve been away for a couple of weeks, but I tried again this morning on another computer of mine and it worked! So I think I’m going to just try and reinstall Ableton and Max on my laptop and go from scratch with the new scripts.
Thank you sooo much Amounra for all of your ongoing support surround all things Livid! It’s very admirable that you keep on updating the scripts and stay so active online regarding these topics. You are truly a gift from God
January 12, 2021 at 12:33 am #984amounraParticipantSo glad you got things working, and thanks for the praise I’ll keep it going as long as I can!
May 4, 2022 at 8:19 am #1079TriMTMemberHello rahmsc and amounra. I have the same problem. I do all the things you say. The problem persist and I dont found any way to connect the drum stepper with the cntrl r. Is the drum stepper fucked up this days or is ther something I can do now in 2022? Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad english.
May 4, 2022 at 9:37 pm #1081amounraParticipantIt’s working fine for me here. Are you using the versions from the m4m8 repository?
